Moira And Mario Rise The Ranks In Yearend 1-Day Tournament.
With two of Malta’s top three among the participants in the Yearend 1-Day Tournament, the odds seemed heavily stacked in favour of a final table topped by Theresa Brousson and with Charles Micallef following immediately behind.
But after Spring League champion Moira Fenech (top photo) beat both the reigning National Champion and the 2016 National Champion, and Mario Camilleri (right in bottom photo) edged out the latter, the odds came tumbling down somewhat with the mayhem-causing pair finishing second and third respectively behind the 12-time Malta Champion.
Though Fenech can smile at a result that saw her climb one place above her initial ranking as well as improve her national rating, her two defeats to lower-rated players in the first and last round, ultimately cost her the title.
Camilleri’s performance was more solid in this sense with his two defeats coming at the hands of the top two finishers, both of whom were ranked much higher than he.
Also rising the ranks with a sixth and seventh final placing were respectively Kevin Pirotta and Alfred Xuereb, who won Ratings Prizes on the strength of four wins each out of the seven games played.
