Eelen Gipson is Malta Open champion

Helen Gipson

Helen Gipson, the UK’s strongest female Scrabble player, has claimed victory in the 4th Malta International Scrabble Open, held between the 13th and 15th of May 2011. Playing in a tough open division, the Scot managed to get the better of Evan Cohen, of Israel, who had been leading for much of the tournament but who was beaten twice in the last two rounds by Gipson and therefore had to settle for second. In third place was Mikki Nicholson of England.

In Division B, another Scot was the star of the tournament, namely Margaret Armstrong, who cruised to a comfortable victory. Jim Wilkie, also of Scotland, and the Maltese player, Pauline Cilia, placed second and third respectively. 36 players played in the Open Division and 38 players in Division B.

The tournament was sponsored by the Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport, the Malta Tourism Authority, Vascas Jewellers, Intercomp and Tilefish and Seiko Uk ltd..
