Eelicata Springs back to success

Two months after suffering a narrow loss in the Malta National Scrabble Championship at the hands of newly crowned National Champion Charles Micallef, David Delicata (shown right of photo) has reasserted his position as the best Maltese Scrabble player in activity by claiming the title of Spring League Champion.

After sailing undefeated through the early phases of the competition and through much of the knock-out phase, Delicata had to dig deep to get the better of the latest day champ Nicky Vella Laurenti in a close best-of-five final, which ended with a scoreline of 3 games to 2 in favour of the five time National Champion.

In the final for third place, reigning National Champion Charles Micallef overcame the opposition of Frans Farrugia, who had done very well to reach the semi-final stage and to win the round-robin supplementary Spring League ahead of Albert Zammit and Josephine Mayo.

Farrugia, Laurenti as well as losing quarter-finalist Moira Fenech are the most dynamic movers up the National Player Rating List, with Farrugia climbing up to thirteenth position, Laurenti now occupying the fourth rank, just one point ahead of Micallef, and Fenech now back in among the top ten.
