Eavid Webb confirmed Malta Open Champion

The Englishman David Webb (shown right in photo playing against Evan Cohen) lived up to his status as top seed and defending champion by claiming the 9th MISO Main Event. In so doing, he won 21 out of 25 rounds, doing better than runner-up Evan Cohen of Israel, who led the pack throughout the first two days of the tournament, and the five time Malta Champion David Delicata, who achieved his best international result to date by finishing third.

In the B Division, the Irish lady Eileen Meghen was the clear winner ahead of another Irish lady Brid O'Brien in second and the man from Japan Kunihiko Kuroda in third.

There were two ratings prizes up for grabs in each division. In the A Division, these went to Carol Johnsen of Australia, who placed a very impressive fourth overall, and Tim Lawrence of England. In the B Division, the prizes were won by Joe Caruana of Malta, and Peter Thorpe of England.

(Updated)

The 9th MISO Main Event has resulted in some broad movements in the national player ratings. On the strength of his sterling performance, David Delicata breaks the +1800 barrier to consolidate his second place on the list. Nicky Vella Laurenti and Sammy Mangion have also moved up the ranks in the upper echelons of the ratings. Further down, Reno Zammit, the highest mover with a gain of 100 ratings points, followed by Joe Caruana, have also climbed up several places on the national player ratings list.

The Main Event Champion, David Webb, broke another barrier, the +2000 ratings point on the WESPA ratings list, enabling him to join a rather exclusive club of around 40  players with such a high international rating. Third placed Delicata is now very close to breaking the +1800 ratings barrier also in the international arena, after rising to a WESPA rating of 1795.
