Eoses Azzopardi enters Malta Olympic Hall of Fame

Moses Azzopardi

Club member Moses Azzopardi recently entered the Hall of Fame of the Malta Olympic Committee, in recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements in Table Tennis.

This prestigious honour is a clear testimony to Moses' sterling lifelong work to help himself and others reap success against all odds, or, true to his biblical namesake, to lead himself and others out of the exile of vulnerability and misfortune through sheer tenacity and hard work.

After contracting polio when he was 18 months old, Moses was encouraged by his family to pursue sporting activities from a young age. After a stint as goalkeeper in the Hamrun football under-14 team, at 11 years of age Moses began to play table-tennis. Aged 15, he was crowned Malta Boys Champion and kept a place in the national ranking list among Malta’s best players for almost twenty years.

The peak of his table tennis activity was reached when he won silver in the Table Tennis Singles competition of first ever Para-Olympics held in Rome in 1960. Later, Moses also represented Malta in the European Championship held in Lyons, France.

In the Doubles competitions, Moses reached the final of the doubles with his brother Paul several times and formed part of the Civil Service team that won the Teams Championship. At the end of his career in table tennis, Moses helped Juventus Antoniona win the Teams Championship.

In his professional life, Moses was very active in the social sector, working for forty years in various high-ranking roles within the Department of Social Security. After retiring, Moses dedicated himself to the cause of the National Association of Pensioners, for which organisation he has been President for the past six years, representing the interests of Malta’s pensioners both in Malta and in Brussels.

Moses’ work in the field of pensions is backed by a solid grounding in business and finance. He obtained a Higher Certificate in Business Studies and a Diploma in Marketing from MCAST, and followed a full-time course abroad to become a Chartered Secretary and Administrator.

Moses has been playing competitive Scrabble within the Malta Scrabble Club for the last 15 years, winning the 3rd Division National Championship a number of times. His brother, Paul Azzopardi, was also active in the Club for many years.

Moses has been happily married to Carmen Azzopardi (nee Lautier) for 43 years, with whom he had and raised three children, Daniela, Konrad and Gabriella, from whom he was further blessed with two wonderful grandchildren, Matthew and Gabriella.

Without doubt, a treasure trove of a life in which Scrabble is but one of many gems.
