Playing Scrabble for charity, fun and glory!
YMCA Homeless Malta has teamed up with the Malta Scrabble Club to organize a fund-raising event in aid of YMCA’s shelters for homeless people in Malta. This event will see an attempt to break the Guinness world record of the most simultaneous games of Scrabble, currently held by Singapore with 521 simultaneous games, being made. The attempt is set to happen on Friday 27th August at 5.30pm at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Valletta.
The Malta Scrabble Club will be mobilizing its membership base, together with its social network of families and friends, to take part in the event in order to maximize the event’s turnout hence the chances of breaking the world record and of raising funds for a worthy social cause.
The Club will also be coordinating the supervision of the event, which requires that there be one supervisor for every fifty simultaneous games. Before the start of play, the Club will brief all participants on the basic rules and procedures to follow during games and will provide score-sheets, result slips and word adjudication equipment to and for all those present.
A basic knowledge of Scrabble and ownership of an ordinary Scrabble set are the only requirements for those who want to take part. More importantly, YMCA is asking the public to contribute €10 per person to the cause of homeless people in Malta.
Those who want to take part in this unique event can register online through YMCA’s website www.ymcahomeless.org or visit the YMCA Drop in Centre in Merchant Street, Valletta, or call on 2122 8038. ![]()
